PANAGIOTIS KONDYLIS
(1943–98) was one of the most formidable Greek thinkers of the twentieth century: a philosopher, intellectual historian, political theorist, and translator whose work moved with rare authority across philosophy, history, sociology, war, ideology, and geopolitics. Born near Olympia, he studied classical philology at the University of Athens before continuing his studies in philosophy, modern history, and political science in Frankfurt and Heidelberg, where he completed his doctorate under Dieter Henrich. Writing chiefly in German, and later translating much of his own work into Greek, Kondylis produced a body of work remarkable for its scale, severity, and independence of mind.
